Harry Kane and Tottenham have a major problem Liverpool avoided
Harry Kane and Philippe Coutinho have both tried to force transfers from Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool

Football clubs are understandably reluctant to let their star players move on and it often takes a significant fee to tempt them to part ways.

As was the case with Harry Kane and Tottenham Hotspur this summer, with the England striker priced out of a move to the current Premier League champions, Manchester City.

The 28-year-old had expressed his desire to leave Spurs this summer and he became caught up in a transfer saga that ended with him having to 'reluctantly' remain in North London.

Since the transfer window closed, Kane's form has been criticised and he's still in search of his first league goal this season.

The England striker was once again a talking point on Sunday evening as his side fell to a 3-1 defeat at the hand's of their North London rivals, Arsenal.

After winning the golden boot last season, the dispirited performance from Kane against the Gunners shows he's currently a mere shadow of the player that has consistently lit up the league over the years.

Whether he's just started the season slowly, or whether there are deeper issues, is unknown - but Nuno Espirito Santo is evidently struggling to get the best out of the man that has long been one of Spurs' most effective players.

Liverpool could've found themselves in a similar situation only a few years ago at the start of the 2017/18 season after Philippe Coutinho saw a move to Barcelona fail to materialise.

The Brazilian had made his desire to leave clear, but the Merseyside club refused to let him move on for anything less than their desired price tag.

It was inevitable the La Liga giants would come back in for Liverpool's 'magician' at a later date, but Coutinho was forced to remain at Anfield longer than he would've preferred.

After a back injury saw him miss the opening four games of the league season, Coutinho returned to the Liverpool line-up at the end of September and continued to prove exactly why Barcelona were so desperate to sign him.

He scored five goals in Liverpool's Champions League group stage fixtures and was on the scoresheet twice in his first five Premier League starts that campaign.

Coutinho totalled 20 goal contributions in all competitions before his January move to Spain. Jurgen Klopp certainly didn't have any trouble getting the most out of him as he arguably played some of his best football during that period.

Of course, it's worth remembering Kane is working under a new manager in Nuno, while Coutinho had been playing under Klopp for some time. Nonetheless, the Reds boss has a good track record of getting the best out of players likely to leave, including Emre Can and Georginio Wijnaldum.

The German's incredible man-management would've certainly played a part, as Coutinho praised his former manager after completing a loan move to Bayern Munich.

He told Sport Bild in 2019: “He’s just a great coach, one of the best of the world. A real leader. I learned so much from him, especially on the mental level.

“His mentality is unique. He somehow always finds the right words, both before the game and during the game."

That's for now from Anfield.
