In an interview that was often argumentative and occasionally heated, the Chairman of the Congress Party’s Central Election Authority who is also the Returning Officer for the election of Congress president, has “guaranteed” that the election for Congress president on 17th October will be “free, fair and honest”, adding “there should not be the slightest apprehension”. Mr. Madhusudan Mistry, a former General Secretary of the Party, also guaranteed that in the event Rahul Gandhi is a candidate alongside others, he will not permit unanimous resolutions passed by Pradesh Congress Committees endorsing Rahul Gandhi to preempt the need for an election. Mr. Mistry gave an assurance that if there is more than one candidate (whoever they may be) an election will be held and it will be free and fair. However, Mr. Mistry repeatedly said that he cannot intervene if the High Command chooses to anoint a particular candidate and sends out word that this particular candidate is the person they would like to see win. He said this would be outside his jurisdiction and he did not even accept he had a moral duty to protest if the High Command issues such directions.
